The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently fined a furniture manufacture over 1.7 Million dollars due to the abundance of worker injuries. Ashley Furniture, which owns an assembly plant in Arcadia Wisconsin incurred over 1,000 work related injuries during a 3 and ½ year time span. OSHA investigators found 12 willful, 12 repeated and 14 serious safety violations when inspecting the plant. Some of the accidents involved workers sustaining finger amputation injuries. OSHA has now placed the Furniture Company on the severe violator enforcement program for their egregious actions.
OSHA found the company did not train workers on safety procedures and hazards present when working on machinery. The company did not prevent machines from unintentionally starting when workers were servicing the machines and changing blades. The company also failed to provide safety mechanisms to help prevent worker injuries.
The US Labor Secretary said “this company created a culture that valued production and profits over worker safety and their workers are paying a price for their failure”.
